Is An Invisible Dog Fence A Humane Option?

!±8± Is An Invisible Dog Fence A Humane Option?

As you would expect, people tend to disagree on whether this is an effective way to keep your pet in the boundaries of your yard, or whether its considered cruel and unusual punishment. Which side do you take? Let's consider all the angles.

An invisible dog fence, at least the most popular model, is a wire buried along your property lines that picks up a signal from a transmitter on the dog's collar. If the dog strays over the line it sends out a warning sound to the animal. If the dog disregards it and doesn't back away from the buried line, then it sends out a corrective impulse, usually in the form of a shock. That shock is what people sometimes get upset about.

This method of fencing is helpful if your neighborhood association doesn't allow visible fencing or if you can't afford regular fence. Let's face it, a fence is expensive. But if you have pets you still need a way to keep them on your property and not wandering all over the area messing up other people's yards.

If you are in the camp that says people should dominate animals then this type of fence wouldn't bother you at all. If you believe that people have no right over animals you probably hate the idea of the electric correction shock. If you're somewhere in the middle you have to decide which is more important to you. Sometimes you can find that middle ground by setting the corrective shock to a lower level that isn't really hurting the dog, just giving them a reminder not to stray. And don't forget that the warning tone is usually all that's necessary once the dog's learned that a shock will follow if not obeyed.
